Sameness REACH
Substance Identity - Sameness
A Substance Identity under REACH (also referred to as “Sameness”) is comparable to a fingerprint of the substance. By using suitable spectroscopic and analytical methods, it is possible to unequivocally describe a chemical substance and assign it to a CAS or EN number.
The information requirements to be submitted for general registration purposes in this context are described in REGULATION (EC) No 1907/2006, ANNEX VI: INFORMATION REQUIREMENTS REFERRED TO IN ARTICLE 10, Section 2.
For EU REACH, a Substance Identity is the pre-requisite for every REACH registration. And there is a Substance Information Exchange Forum (SIEF) that enables registrants of the same substance to share the collected data for a joint registration. With your Substance Identity you are entitled to receive a "Letter of Access" (LoA) in order to join the SIEF. This process is comparable for chemicals legislation worldwide:
- EU REACH
- China REACH
- Korea: AREC („Act on the Registration and Evaluation of Chemical Substances“), K-REACH
- Türkiye: KKDIK, Türkiye REACH
- United Kingdom: UK REACH
LAUS is specialized in Substance Identity Profiles for substances of any kind:
- Organic mono-constituents
- Inorganic salts, oxides, alloys, elements
- Gases
- Organic multi-constituents
- Pigments/dyes
- UVCBs (unknown or variable composition, complex reaction products or biological materials)
- Reaction masses
- Mixtures
- Waxes and oils
- Nanomaterials
Sameness Package
Our experts offer to put together a package with all relevant analyses in order to unequivocal identify your substance. You will receive a report for submission to ECHA. For most substances the following analyses are applicable:
- UV/VIS at 3 pH-values
- FTIR
- XRD
- XRF
- 1H-NMR/13C-NMR/solid NMR
- GC/HPLC
- HPLC and GC with MS
- ICP-OES and ICP-MS
- Titration
- GPC
- Water content (gravimetric, Karl Fischer, freeze drying)
For some substance groups (paraffines, waxes and such) special analytical methods are available.
For the full characterization of nanomaterials and a complete Substance Identity Profile for example we use additional techniques:
Methods for the Characterization of Nanomaterials and Nanoforms
- TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy) and/or SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy)
- PSD (Particle Size Distribution) using Laser Diffraction
and DLS (Dynamic Light Scattering)
- for solids: freefall shaft (dry dispersion)
- for liquids: wet dispersion
- for aerosols: pump systems and aerosols under pressure - FTIR
- XRF
- ICP-MS
- XRD: X-ray diffraction
Characterization of amorphous Nanoforms including quantification by Rietveld method - BET (Brunauer–Emmett–Teller)
Determination of specific surface by gas adsorption - Zeta Potential
- Moisture and water: gravimetric method for solids and/or with Karl-Fischer method for liquids
- 1H-NMR/13C-NMR
