ETHANOL Update

The Biocidal Products Committee (BPC) of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) adopted its opinions in February 2026 supporting the approval of Ethanol as an active substance for the following product-types:

PT 1 – Human hygiene: e.g., hand disinfectants

PT 2 – Disinfectants and algaecides: not intended for direct contact with humans or animals

PT 4 – Food and feed area disinfectants: products used in food &feed processing environments

The Standing Committee on Biocidal Products (SCBP) has now published the respective draft Implementing Regulation. Assuming the final agreement of the SCBP,

the projected approval date will be 1 May 2028.

This leaves only a little over 18 months to prepare and submit the required dossiers to keep ethanol-containing biocidal products on the market.

The Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR, (EU) 528/2012) regulates the placing on the market and the use of biocidal products in the EU.

According to Annex II a new active substance for biocidal products needs to be approved on Union level in a first step before any biocidal product containing the active substance can be authorized. You can find a list of approved active substances on the ECHA website. In order to place a biocidal product on the market, the product needs to be authorized according to Annex III after approval of the active substance. The authorization can be on national or Union level, depending on the market served.

LAUS supports you with tests according to the principles of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP). Based on our many years of experience, we would be happy to develop a suitable individual test strategy with you, for instance a customized proposal for spray applications.

PT 3     Veterinary hygiene

PT 4     Food and feed area

PT 5     Drinking water

Main group 2: Preservatives

PT 6     Preservatives for products during storage

PT 7     Film preservatives

PT 8     Wood preservatives

PT 9     Fibre, leather, rubber and polymerised materials preservatives

PT 10   Construction material preservatives

PT 11   Preservatives for liquid-cooling and processing systems

PT 12   Slimicides

PT 13   Working or cutting fluid preservatives

Main group 3: Pest control

PT 14   Rodenticides
